Bed Pillow Styling

TARA DENNIS

While I would say 'there are no hard and fast rules for styling your bed', over the years these pillow and cushion combinations have always worked for me. Of course the bed needs to look good, but I think it's just as important that your bed is quick and easy to make every day by whoever gets the job!

With the basics covered - a good mattress and soft sleeping pillows, you have a blank canvas to add your own style and flair. I prefer classic white sheets over coloured, I think you just have more options. With the additon of a few cushions and maybe a throw or quilt, it's my styling secret that always works. It means you can change the look of a bed easily according to who sleeps there, your mood or the season.

To style any size bed, I generally use a fitted sheet for the base while a flat sheet on top is optional. It's great to use a flat sheet for a lighter layer in the wamer months, or else if you prefer to sleep under a blanket rather than a duvet.

Big pillows first. Generously sized, Euro pillows add height and comfort and work well with or without a bed head. For a Queen size bed, two Euro pillows are ideal. For a King or Super King size bed, you might like to try three Euros for a generous look.

With your sleeping pillows propped against the Euros, add accent cushions that bring everything together.

For a minimal style with no fuss, two large lumbar cushions (40cm x 60cm) look great. The look is simple and clean, and works well for both Queen and King size beds.

This combination is a great one for teen bedrooms. Even my son can make his bed look good with this combination!

For a balanced look for Queen and King size beds, this is a great arrangement and one I use often.

Prop your sleeping pillows up against your Euro pillows or bedhead and place two square (50cm x 50cm) accent cushions with a small lumbar cushion in front. This gives a 'finished' look to any bed and the lumbar cushion in front covers that 'gap' between the cushions.

We all like a quick refresh and a great way to do it is by simply swapping out your cushion covers! All of our plain cushions, in any size are available as cover only options. This way you can whip off the old covers and change the colours and textures instantly allowing a host of completely different styling looks for your bed.

To finish, I generally like to style a bed with a throw or blanket. It not only adds texture and warmth but ties everything together, making it feel complete. Read our size guide here.

Washability is an issue, so it's worth knowing that many of the blankets and throws in our lovely Bemboka collection are fully machine washable, making them both practical as well as beautiful.

So, if you're looking to style your bed in a fresh and new way, remember it doesn't need to be complicated. I really do believe that a few thoughtfully placed cushions can make all the difference. Keep it simple, and make it stylish.
